Cabinet Hardware Maintenance: Keeping It Fresh

Cabinet hardware—the knobs and pulls on your doors and drawers—are some of the most frequently touched surfaces in your home. Regular maintenance not only keeps them looking great and hygienic but also prevents minor issues like a loose handle from becoming a bigger problem. A few simple checks can keep your hardware in top shape.

🔩 The Most Common Task: Tightening

The constant pulling and pushing can cause the screws holding your hardware to loosen over time.

🔧
The Fix: At least once a year, take a screwdriver and simply tighten the screws from the inside of the cabinet doors and drawers. This prevents the hardware from wobbling, which can eventually damage the wood.

If a screw just spins without tightening, the hole is stripped. A quick fix is to remove the screw, put a drop of wood glue and a wooden toothpick in the hole, break it off flush, and then re-drive the screw.

🧼 Cleaning Different Hardware Finishes

Different materials require different care to avoid damage.

Chrome, Nickel, Stainless Steel

These durable finishes can be cleaned with a soft cloth and a simple solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Dry immediately to prevent water spots.

Brass and Bronze

For unlacquered brass, use a dedicated brass cleaner to polish it. For lacquered or oil-rubbed bronze finishes, use only mild soap and water, as harsh chemicals can strip the finish.

Matte Black and Painted

These finishes are more delicate. Use a soft, damp cloth only. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads which can scratch the surface.

🔄 When to Replace Hardware

Sometimes, maintenance isn't enough.

Consider Replacement If:

  • The protective finish is worn off and the metal is corroding or tarnishing.
  • The hardware is physically broken or bent.
  • You are simply tired of the style and want an inexpensive way to update the look of your kitchen or bathroom.

Keeping your hardware clean and tight is an easy way to maintain the look of your cabinets. If you're ready for a style update or need help with any cabinet repairs, The Box Advantage Group's handyman services are at your disposal. Contact us for a fresh new look.
