Door Sweep Installation: Draft Prevention

Is there a noticeable draft coming from under your exterior door? That gap is not only uncomfortable, but it's also a major source of energy loss. A door sweep is a simple, effective device that you attach to the bottom of your door to seal that gap. Installing one is a quick and easy DIY project that can instantly improve your home's comfort and energy efficiency.

📋 Types of Door Sweeps

There are several common styles to choose from.

🔩
Standard Screw-On Sweep: A simple strip of aluminum or plastic with a flexible vinyl or brush seal. It screws directly onto the face of the door.
U-shaped
U-Shaped (Slide-On) Sweep: This type slides onto the bottom of the door and is often held in place by tension or a few screws on the side. It seals gaps on both sides of the door bottom.
automatic
Automatic Door Sweep: A more advanced option that is mortised into the bottom of the door. It automatically drops down to seal the gap when the door is closed and retracts when opened.

🔧 How to Install a Standard Screw-On Sweep

This is the most common and straightforward type to install.

1
Measure and Cut: Close the door. Measure the width of the door and cut the door sweep to that exact length using a hacksaw.
2
Position the Sweep: Hold the sweep against the inside bottom edge of the door. Adjust it so the flexible seal makes light contact with the top of the threshold. It should be snug, but not so tight that it makes the door difficult to open and close.
3
Mark the Screw Holes: Once you have the perfect position, use a pencil or awl to mark the screw hole locations on the door.
4
Drill Pilot Holes and Install: Remove the sweep and drill small pilot holes at your marks. This prevents the door from splitting. Then, screw the door sweep securely in place.

After installation, open and close the door several times to ensure it operates smoothly and a good seal is being made all the way across.
