For larger holes, you'll need to provide some backing for the patch.
Using a Self-Adhesive Mesh Patch:
- Clean the Area: Remove any loose drywall and sand the edges smooth.
- Apply the Patch: Center the self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole and press it firmly against the wall.
- Apply Joint Compound: Using a 6-inch drywall knife, apply a thin layer of joint compound over the mesh, feathering the edges outward.
- Apply a Second Coat: Let the first coat dry completely. Apply a second, wider coat, again feathering the edges to blend it with the wall.
- Finish: Once dry, sand the area smooth, prime, and paint.
🛠️ Fixing Large Holes
For holes larger than 6 inches, you'll need to cut a new piece of drywall.
The best method is the "California Patch" or cutting a square piece of drywall, adding wood backing strips inside the wall for support, and then screwing the new piece into the backing before finishing with tape and compound.
