Garden Bed Edging: Clean Landscape Lines
Garden Bed EdgingClean LinesLandscapeTechniques

A sharp, well-defined edge is what separates a tidy landscape bed from the surrounding lawn. Edging acts as a frame for your garden, creating clean lines, preventing grass from creeping into your beds, and holding mulch in place. Choosing the right edging material and installing it correctly can elevate the look of your entire landscape.

📋 Common Edging Materials

Each type offers a different look and level of durability.

Spade-Cut Edge

Pros: Natural, classic look, and completely free. Cons: Requires regular maintenance with a spade or edger to keep the line sharp.

Plastic or Metal Strips

Pros: Inexpensive and effective at creating a barrier. Flexible for creating curves. Cons: Plastic can become brittle and pop out of the ground; can look less high-end.

Pavers or Bricks

Pros: Very durable, creates a decorative and solid border. Can be set flush with the lawn for easy mowing. Cons: More labor-intensive to install properly.

Natural Stone

Pros: Offers a beautiful, rustic look that blends well with naturalistic gardens. Cons: Can be expensive and heavy to work with.

🔧 How to Create a Spade-Cut Edge

This is a classic technique that creates a beautiful, natural-looking trench.

1
Define the Line: Lay out a garden hose on the ground to create the desired curve for your bed.
2
Make the Cut: Use a sharp, straight-edged spade. Push the spade straight down into the ground about 4-6 inches deep, following the line of your hose.
3
Create the Trench: Make a second series of cuts at a 45-degree angle from inside the bed to meet your first cut. This will allow you to scoop out a V-shaped trench of sod.
4
Add Mulch: Fill the bed with mulch right up to the newly cut edge.

Clean edges are the finishing touch that makes a landscape look professionally maintained. The Box Advantage Group provides expert bed edging, mulching, and a full range of groundskeeping services to give your property a sharp, polished look.
