Seasonal Garden Cleanup: Year-Round Maintenance

A healthy and beautiful garden requires year-round attention. Seasonal cleanup is about more than just tidiness; it's about preparing your garden for the upcoming season, preventing disease, and setting the stage for healthy growth. Tackling these key tasks in the spring and fall will keep your garden beds in top shape.

🌸 Spring Cleanup: Waking Up the Garden

As the weather warms, it's time to clear the way for new growth.

1
Clear Away Debris: Rake out fallen leaves and other debris from your garden beds. This improves air circulation and prevents pests and diseases from overwintering.
2
Cut Back Perennials and Grasses: If you left them for winter interest, now is the time to cut back the dead stems of your perennials and ornamental grasses to about 4-6 inches from the ground.
3
Weed Thoroughly: Pull any weeds that have emerged while they are small and easy to remove. Getting them now prevents them from going to seed.
4
Edge Your Beds: Use a spade to create a clean, sharp edge around your garden beds for a polished look.
5
Top-Dress with Compost and Mulch: Apply a fresh layer of compost and then a 2-inch layer of mulch to nourish the soil, retain moisture, and suppress new weeds.

🍂 Fall Cleanup: Putting the Garden to Bed

Preparing your garden for winter is crucial for its health next spring.

Fall Garden Checklist:

  • Remove Annuals: Pull up all spent summer annuals and add them to your compost pile (if they are disease-free).
  • Cut Back Diseased Perennials: Cut back any perennials that showed signs of disease (like powdery mildew on bee balm) to prevent the disease from overwintering.
  • Consider Leaving Some Stems: Leaving the sturdy stems and seed heads of plants like coneflowers and grasses provides winter interest and food for birds.
  • Add Mulch: After the ground has frozen, apply a layer of mulch to insulate the roots of your perennials and shrubs.
  • Plant Spring Bulbs: Fall is the time to plant tulips, daffodils, and other spring-blooming bulbs.
