Upholstery Cleaning: Fabric Care Guide
Upholstery CleaningFabric CareMaintenanceLongevity

Your upholstered furniture is a major investment and a centerpiece of your living space. Regular cleaning not only keeps it looking great but also extends its life by removing abrasive dust and dirt. However, not all fabrics are the same. The key to safe and effective upholstery cleaning is to first identify your fabric type by checking its cleaning code.

🏷️ Understanding the Cleaning Codes

Look for a tag on your furniture (usually under a cushion) with one of these letter codes. This code tells you what type of cleaning agent is safe to use.

W
Code W: Stands for "Water-based." You can use water-based cleaning solutions on this fabric. This is the most common and easiest type to clean.
S
Code S: Stands for "Solvent-based." You must use a water-free solvent (dry cleaning solvent). Water will damage this fabric.
W/S
Code W/S: You can use either water-based or solvent-based cleaners.
X
Code X: This fabric can only be cleaned by vacuuming or light brushing. Do not use any liquid or solvent cleaners.

🧽 General Upholstery Care and Spot Cleaning

For all fabric types, regular maintenance is key.

1
Vacuum Regularly: Use an upholstery attachment to vacuum your furniture weekly. This removes surface dirt before it becomes embedded in the fibers.
2
Act on Spills Immediately: Blot fresh spills with a clean, white cloth. Do not rub, as this can push the stain deeper.
3
Spot Test First: Before using any cleaning solution, always test it on a small, inconspicuous area of the furniture to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.
4
Clean Gently: When spot cleaning, work from the outside of the stain toward the center to prevent it from spreading.

When in doubt, always err on the side of caution. Using the wrong cleaner on a delicate fabric can cause permanent damage, like water rings or color bleeding.

For deep-set stains or a full-sofa refresh, professional maintenance is the safest and most effective option. Contact The Box Advantage Group for expert maintenance services. We can identify your fabric type and use the appropriate method to safely restore its beauty.
