Window Screen Replacement: DIY Guide

Old, faded, or torn window screens can detract from your home's curb appeal and fail to keep insects out. Replacing the entire screen mesh is an inexpensive and satisfying DIY project that can make your windows look brand new. All you need are a few specialty tools and a flat surface to work on.

📋 Materials and Tools

Gather everything before you begin.

mesh
New Screen Mesh: Available in fiberglass (most common) or aluminum.
spline
New Spline: This rubber cord holds the screen in place. It's best to buy new spline that matches the diameter of the old spline.
tool
Spline Roller: A special tool with two wheels (convex and concave) for pushing the spline into the frame channel.
🔪
Utility Knife and a Small Screwdriver.

🔧 The Replacement Process

Follow these steps for a tight, professional-looking result.

1
Remove Old Screen: Place the screen frame on a flat surface. Use a small screwdriver to pry up the old spline and pull it out of the channel. Remove the old mesh.
2
Position New Mesh: Unroll the new screen mesh over the frame, making sure it overlaps the channel by about an inch on all sides.
3
Start the Spline: Use the convex (rounded) wheel of your spline roller to gently press the mesh into the channel on one side of the frame.
4
Roll in the Spline: Starting at a corner, use the concave (grooved) wheel of the roller to push the new spline into the channel over the mesh. Keep the screen taut with your free hand as you work your way around the frame.
5
Trim the Excess: With the spline fully seated, use a sharp utility knife to carefully trim away the excess screen mesh on the outside of the channel.

If you're replacing the screen in a large frame, it can be helpful to clamp the frame down to your work surface to prevent it from bowing as you pull the screen taut.
