Cabinet Door Adjustment: Fixing Misaligned Doors

Over time, cabinet doors can settle and fall out of alignment, resulting in uneven gaps, rubbing against each other, or not closing properly. If you have modern European-style concealed hinges, you're in luck. These hinges are designed to be easily adjusted with just a Phillips-head screwdriver, allowing you to get your doors perfectly aligned in minutes.

🔩 Understanding the Adjustment Screws

Most European hinges have three adjustment screws, each controlling a different direction of movement.

↔️
Side-to-Side Adjustment: This screw moves the door left or right, allowing you to even out the gap between two doors. It's usually the screw closest to the cabinet door.
↕️
Up-and-Down Adjustment: These screws move the door vertically, letting you align the top or bottom of the door with adjacent doors or drawers. You'll need to loosen the mounting screws on the hinge plate, shift the door, and then retighten.
🔄
In-and-Out Adjustment: This screw, typically at the back of the hinge, moves the door closer to or farther from the cabinet frame. This adjusts the gap when the door is closed.

🔧 The Adjustment Process

The key is to make small, incremental adjustments.

1
Start with the Top Hinge: Begin by making adjustments to the top hinge first.
2
Adjust Side-to-Side: Turn the side-to-side screw a quarter-turn at a time. Close the door to check the alignment. Continue with small adjustments on both top and bottom hinges until the vertical gap is even.
3
Adjust Up-and-Down: If the tops of the doors are not aligned, slightly loosen the mounting screws on both hinges, lift or lower the door until it's aligned, and then retighten the screws.
4
Adjust In-and-Out: Finally, adjust the depth screw so the door sits flush with the adjacent doors when closed.

Patience is key. Adjust one screw a little bit at a time, then check the result before continuing. This prevents over-correction and frustration.
