Door Threshold Replacement: Weather Protection

The threshold of an exterior door takes a lot of abuse from foot traffic and weather. Over time, it can become worn, bent, or damaged, creating a gap under your door. This gap is a major source of drafts, water infiltration, and even pests. Replacing a worn-out threshold is an important project for maintaining your home's energy efficiency and protecting it from the elements.

🔍 Step 1: Remove the Old Threshold

Removing the old unit is often the hardest part of the job.

1
Remove Screws: Locate and remove all the screws holding the old threshold in place. They may be hidden under a vinyl or rubber insert.
2
Cut the Threshold: Use a reciprocating saw or an oscillating multi-tool to cut the metal or wood threshold into two or three pieces. This relieves the pressure and makes it much easier to remove.
3
Pry it Out: Use a pry bar to carefully lift the cut pieces out of the opening. Clean the area underneath thoroughly.

📏 Step 2: Cut and Fit the New Threshold

Precision is key for a tight seal.

📐
Measure and Transfer: Measure the width of the door opening at the floor. Transfer this measurement to your new threshold.

Cut to Length: Use a hacksaw (for aluminum) or a miter saw (for wood) to cut the threshold to the correct length. You will also need to use a jigsaw or coping saw to notch the ends to fit around the door jambs.

Test the Fit: Dry-fit the new threshold in the opening to ensure it's snug and the door can close over it without binding.

🔩 Step 3: Install and Seal

The final step is to secure the new threshold and make it weatherproof.

Before setting the threshold in place, apply a generous bead of exterior-grade silicone caulk to the subfloor. This will create a waterproof seal to prevent any water from getting underneath.

Press the threshold firmly into the caulk, then fasten it to the floor with the provided screws. Adjust the height of the threshold (if it's an adjustable model) so that it makes light, even contact with the bottom of the door, creating a good seal.
