Water Feature Maintenance: Ponds and Fountains

A water feature, whether it's a tranquil pond or a bubbling fountain, can be a beautiful and serene focal point in your landscape. However, to keep the water clear, the sound pleasant, and the system running properly, regular maintenance is essential. A little weekly and seasonal care will prevent common problems like algae blooms and pump failures.
weekly Weekly Maintenance Checklist
Perform these quick tasks each week to keep your water feature healthy.
Weekly Tasks:
- Skim Debris: Use a small net to remove any leaves, twigs, or other floating debris before it has a chance to sink and decay.
- Top Off Water Level: Water will evaporate, especially in the summer. Add fresh water as needed to keep the pump fully submerged.
- Check the Pump: Ensure the pump is running smoothly and has good flow. If the flow is weak, the intake may be clogged.
- Add Beneficial Bacteria (for Ponds): Adding a weekly dose of beneficial bacteria helps to break down organic waste and keep the water clear.
monthly Monthly and Seasonal Tasks
These bigger tasks keep the system in top shape.
Clean the Pump
About once a month, unplug the pump and pull it out of the water. Remove the pre-filter or screen and clean out any accumulated gunk and algae to ensure strong water flow.
Manage Algae
If you have "string algae," you can physically remove it by twirling it around a brush. For "green water" (suspended algae), ensure you have enough aquatic plants and proper filtration. Use an algaecide only as a last resort.
Trim Aquatic Plants
In a pond, periodically trim back any overgrown or yellowing aquatic plants to keep them healthy.
Fall & Winter Prep
Before winter, remove fallen leaves promptly. In cold climates, you may need to remove the pump from the water and shut down the feature to prevent freeze damage.
For ponds with fish, never drain and scrub the pond completely. This removes the beneficial bacteria that form the pond's ecosystem. A partial water change is a much healthier approach.
