Lawn Mowing Techniques: Proper Grass Cutting

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade's height in a single mowing. For example, if you want to maintain a height of 3 inches, you should mow the grass when it reaches 4.5 inches. Cutting more than this shocks the grass, stunts root growth, and makes it more susceptible to stress and disease.

Taller grass is healthier grass. Mowing too short (scalping) is one of the most common and damaging lawn care mistakes.
